Mr. Paul Leonard Thurmond, Jr., 68, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2014 at Beacon Place Hospice and Palliative Care. A memorial service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Wednesday, January 22, 2014 at Forbis and Dick, N. Elm Street Chapel.

 

Mr. Thurmond was born on March 4, 1945 in Santa Maria, Ca., a son of the late Evelyn Clemmons Thurmond and Paul Leonard Thurmond, Sr. He retired from the Greensboro Police Department following 26 years of service. In 1990 he was named Police Officer of the Year in N.C. by the American Legion. A U.S. Air Force Veteran, he served his county with a tour of duty during the Vietnam War as a K-9 Handler. He was a member of Lee’s Chapel United Methodist Church.

 

He was an avid and accomplished marathon runner, competing in more than a dozen marathons. He loved his dogs, the outdoors, the ocean, fishing, and Carolina Basketball. Survivors include two children, Shanna Reece and husband Chris of Greensboro, a son Paul Daniel Thurmond and wife Cali of Greensboro; grandchildren, Wilson Paul Reece, Reagan Victoria Reece and Madilyn Ann Thurmond; a sister, Sharon Ann Canham of Greensboro and a brother, Harry E. Thurmond of Texas. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Caldwell Thurmond in 2013.

 

The family will receive friends from 6-7:30 PM Wednesday prior to the memorial service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Ave., Greensboro, NC 27405.
