OBITUARY:

Kevin Pendergast, a retired New York City police officer, died in his West Brighton home. He was 57.

Born in Brooklyn, Mr. Pendergast served in the Air Force from 1968 to 1972, spending time as a dog handler with the 37th SPS in Vietnam and working as a military policeman when he returned to the United States.

Mr. Pendergast, a 1966 graduate of Curtis High School, worked as a court officer in Manhattan before joining the 9th Precinct of the NYPD in lower Manhattan in 1973. He retired some 16 years later.

For all his career accomplishments, one of Mr. Prendergast’s proudest moments came when he was retired. He and a friend rescued three children from a burning house in New Brighton.

He also was a member of the Warren Jaques committee and a Baseball Coach in the Snug Harbor Little League and the Spartan League at Sacred Heart R.C. Church, West Brighton, where he also was a parishioner.

Mr. Pendergast is survived by two sons, Joseph and Brian; two Daughters, Jill Long and Keri Pendergast; his parents, Nora and Joseph; a brother, John; three grandchildren and his ex-wife, Margaret.

Burial was in St. Peter's Cemetery, West Brighton, Staten Island Advance, 01 Jan 2007.
