Obituary:

 

Alan Douglas Coffin, 75, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2013, surrounded by his wife and children, after complications from surgery on his lungs. Born Sept. 6, 1938, in Shelbyville, Ind., to George Oliver and Julia Lee Coffin.
 
Alan joined the U.S. Navy and served May 31, 1956 - Aug. 25,1959.  He joined the U.S. Army Oct.  24,1961 - May31,1979.  He served two tours in Vietnam Nov. 30, 1967 - Nov. 20, 1968 & July 31, 1969 - July 1, 1970.  He was in the military police with the dog handlers, as their First Sgt, but did not have a dog.  Alan retired as an E-8 First Sgt. from the U.S. Army in 1979.
He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal with one Silver Star, and two Bronze Stars, the Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal with 60 Device, the Army Commendation Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Service Medal.
 
He married Emily Connie Barclay, Sept. 10, 1960.
 
He lived in Henderson for 32 years and worked for several casinos until retirement. Alan enjoyed going to the shooting range, Desert Sportsman Rifle and Pistol Club, Inc., and spending time with his family and friends during his retirement. He also enjoyed spending time in his garden as well as keeping everyone updated with the latest jokes.
 
Alan was preceded in death by his parents, George and Julie Coffin; and son, George Coffin. He is survived by his wife, Connie; his children, Christopher Coffin of Las Vegas, Tamaula Coffin of Henderson, Timothy Coffin of Henderson, and Shawn Coffin (Stacey) of Las Vegas; 11 grandchildren, James, Azalee, Douglas, Kattielyn, Keirra, Maggie, Damien, Kacy, Cody, Wyatt and Dawson; sister, Phyllis Hatcher of Iowa and Susan Camp (Terry) of Arkansas; and brother, James Coffin of Oklahoma.
 
Alan will be laid to rest at Southern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery, 1900 Veterans Memorial Drive, Boulder City.  At his request, there will be no services.
