“The Staten Island War Dog Memorial”

Sergeant Thomas Tucker, a Vietnam veteran dog handler and member of the VDHA, envisioned the memorial and its design years ago. Thomas Tucker was with the USMC, and handled Coco-1A99 a Sentry/Scout Dog and Rex-A061 a Sentry Dog, during the Vietnam War. Tom acquired the assistance of Mr. Robert Flood, Artist Memorial Monuments, Inc.

A meeting with Coast Guard Officials and Dog Handlers was held at the U.S Coast Guard Base, Activities New York area in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York, at which time the art work and location was finalized, the specifications and art work was sent to Barre, Vermont, USA to be made.

On April 24, 2004, Vietnam Veteran Dog Handler and VDHA member Everett Barraclough, 23rd ID, 57th Scout Dog Platoon, handled Chase-98X6, a Scout Dog, and members of the Coast Guard K-9 Unit started the ground breaking, while Vietnam Veteran John C. Gallo and retired National Guardsman Bruce W. Barraclough, Sr. assisted in the ground breaking, but the hard work and dedication, goes out to Staten Island Boy Scout Troop 37 whom made the first step for installation of the monument possible, they dug and poured to a fine finish.

The Monument was erected on August 20, 2004, by Artist Memorial Monument, Inc.

The dedication was held on October 29, 2004 at 10:00 am at the U.S Coast Guard Base, Activities New York area in Fort Wadsworth, Staten Island, New York, across from its GYM.
