I entered the Air Force 3 months after my seventeenth birthday as a guaranteed Security Policeman in February 1973. I volunteered for K-9 and was accepted. Upon graduating from Military Working Dog Tech School, I was assigned to Takhli Royal Thai Air Force Base (RTAFB), Thailand in September 1973 as a patrol dog handler. I handled a patrol/tunnel dog Maverick (5K49). I remained there until the base was closed and all US Air Force facilities were turned over to the Thai Air Force. One of the last there, I had to take a taxi across country to my new duty assignment at Udorn RTAFB, Thailand in October 1974. I was stationed at Udorn from 1974 until closure as a Patrol, Sentry and Drug Dog Handler until closure in February 1976. I handled both sentry dogs ‘Crazy’ Major-85X8 and drug dog Major-4B14. A photo of me and Sentry dog “Crazy Major”, that was taken in 1975, is at the top of this article. (NOTE: It was during this tenure at Udorn during our successful recapture of the merchant ship Mayaguez held by Vietnamese forces in Cambodia that my very first USAF Supervisor when at Takhli RTAFB, SSgt Faleagafulu Ilaoa and several close friends and colleagues were killed in action on May 13, 1975.) After closing Udorn RTAFB I was transferred to U-Tapao RTAFB to assist as a drug dog handler in clearing all customs inspection for materials and equipment destined to other worldwide locations out of the U-Tapao and Sattahip Naval Base, Thailand. After leaving and closing U-Tapao I was reassigned to Blytheville Air Force Base, Arkansas and last worked K-9 in 1977 due to promotions. Retired March 1993. James Allen Williams II, MSgt, USAF Ret
