I enlisted in the Air Force on 9 Jan 62 and completed basic training and Air Police School at Lackland. In Jun 62 I arrived at my first assignment, Ben Guerir AB, Morocco, a SAC B-47 base, where I worked law enforcement for 15 months. While at Ben Guerir I attended the 16AF Air Police Academy at Torrejon AB in Madrid, Spain–and, survived the Cuban Missile Crisis. In Jul 63 I was reassigned to the 42nd Combat Defense Squadron at Loring AFB, Maine. After 3 months on security flight I moved to K-9 where I handled sentry dog “Jack” (E907) for the next three years. During that time I worked with George M. Bevich, Jr and sentry dog Rex. We were on the same K-9 flight together for more than a year and became good friends. Then, in Jan 66 George was reassigned to TSN. It was there, on 4 Dec 66, that he was KIA during a VC attack on the base. George was the first Air Force dog handler to die in Vietnam–and, although 43 years have passed since he was killed, those of us who knew and worked with George have never forgotten him. We continue to honor his memory, and we always will. I eventually left the Air Police field to pursue other interests. In my career I had 3 additional tours at Loring. I also had assignments to the 95th Security Police Squadron at Goose Bay, Labrador; AFROTC Syracuse University; RAF Mildenhall, England; Spangdahlem AB, Germany; and, the National Security Agency, Ft Meade, MD. Married Sep 1965 (44 years), my wife Barbara and I have a daughter, Lara, and a son, Timothy (deceased). I retired from the Air Force on 1 Sep 89 after serving 27 years, 9 months. Of all my career assignments the years I spent with my Air Police brothers in the sentry dog section at Loring were without question the best of my career. I am proud to have been a part of it and without hesitation I would do it all over again. I am grateful to the VDHA for offering Associate Memberships, which makes it possible for old dog handlers like me–who were not called to serve in Vietnam–to share in its unique brotherhood and camaraderie. I am very proud to support the VDHA and to be a part of it as an Associate Life Member.
