Lance Cpl. Abraham Tarwoe, 25, of Providence, R.I., was killed in action on April 12 during a dismounted patrol in Helmand province’s Marjah district. Tarwoe’s dog, Yeager, survived the attack. Abraham Tarwoe, who served with Weapons Company, 2nd Bn., 9th Marines, was honored by fellow Marines during a memorial service on April 22. Tarwoe’s fellow Marines remember his contagious laughter and smile, as well as his unfaltering courage on the battlefield. Tarwoe and his family fled Liberia in 1998 when he was just 12 during the Liberian civil wars. “For many reasons, he didn’t want to leave Liberia,” Tarwoe’s uncle said. “He had his friends and his life, but he saw the opportunity that existed in the U.S., so he went.” On May 17, he was laid to rest with full military honors in his home village of Flehla, Liberia. Tarwoe leaves behind his wife Juah Kelly and their 18-month-old son.
